Astaxanthin belongs to the carotenoids. Carotenoids are secondary plant metabolites that form an extensive class of natural colour pigments. As a red pigment, astaxanthin is produced as a metabolic product of photosynthesis in algae, plankton and also in some bacteria and fungi where it protects against oxidation damage caused by light. Astaxanthin is water and fat soluble and has a unique molecular structure. It is able to coat the entire double-layered cell membrane and protect both the inside and outside of the cell membrane from oxidation. Thus, astaxanthin is one of nature's most powerful antioxidants.
Astaxanthin Plus contains natural astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis algae. The additional algae complex from AFA Klamath algae, chlorella and bladderwrack is a valuable supplier of vitamins, (essential) amino acids, enzymes, minerals, trace elements and essential fatty acids.
