5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a naturally occurring substance and the direct precursor of serotonin, which in turn is needed for the formation of melatonin.
Serotonin – often referred to as the ‘happiness hormone’ – performs numerous tasks in the body: it influences mood and emotional stability, regulates pain perception, aids digestion and plays a role in eating behaviour, body temperature and circulation. Melatonin, the well-known ‘sleep hormone’, on the other hand, is primarily important for regulating the day-night rhythm.
Since 5-HTP is not found in the daily diet, the body normally produces it from the essential amino acid L-tryptophan. However, a large proportion of the tryptophan ingested is used for other metabolic pathways – such as protein synthesis or kynurenine metabolism – and is therefore not fully available for the formation of serotonin and melatonin.
5-HTP offers an advantage here: it is converted directly into serotonin without first being used for other processes. This makes it particularly well suited for specifically supporting the body's own serotonin and melatonin production.
The 5-hydroxytryptophan contained in Allvital 5-HTP is extracted from the seeds of the African black bean (Griffonia simplicifolia). It is well absorbed in the intestine and can cross the blood-brain barrier, making it available to the body where it is needed.
Note: 5-HTP should be taken under medical supervision. Please refer to the sections on side effects and interactions in our blog about 5-HTP.
