Carbonate

Carbonate

Carbonates buffer acids in the body. Carbonates react with water to form hydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate). Oral intake of carbonates can both directly and indirectly increase the concentration of bicarbonate in the blood, which improves the buffering capacity of the blood and allows acids to be removed from the intercellular space (extracellular deacidification).
