L-glutathione is composed of the amino acids glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. It is present in high concentrations in almost all cells. Reduced or active l-glutathione can be newly formed in the body or obtained from oxidised glutathione. Reduced and oxidised glutathione together form a biological redox system: an interplay of electron uptake (reduction) and electron release (oxidation).
The body is able to regulate glutathione synthesis. However, various circumstances - such as oxidative stress - can lead to an increased consumption of glutathione and may cause deficiency.
L-Glutathione 500 contains reduced l-glutathione in enteric-coated capsules to protect it from premature oxidation and breakdown in the digestive tract.
