Niacin or nicotinic acid is a form of vitamin B3. It is a water-soluble vitaminand, together with niacinamide and nicotinamide riboside, known as the vitamin B3 complex. It serves as a precursor for the important coenzymes NAD and NADP.
Like all B vitamins, niacin is involved in many metabolic processes. It plays a role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and amino acids and thus contributes to a normal energy metabolism in our cells. Niacin also contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological function. Furthermore, it is necessary for the maintenance of healthy mucous membranes and healthy skin. Vitamin B3 contains 100 mg niacin per capsule.
Niacin can cause a brief and harmless reddening of the skin with a tingling sensation (so-called flush symptoms).
